Wearing of Name Badges

Letter to all Branches, Regional Councils and Regional Offices:- 4 November 2008

The above matter was raised at the National Conference of Supervisory, Clerical and Other Salaried Grades 2007. The resolution stated “This Conference calls upon the Council of Executives to adopt a policy of ending the compulsory wearing of name badges for our grades… Our members are also being forced to wear name badges in office environments that have no ‘face to face’ involvement with the general public.”

This matter was taken up with all companies where it was again considered by the General Grades Committee who took the following decision.

“That we note the companies that have responded to our request for information allow for a pseudonym to be used where appropriate. However, the main thrust of the resolution states Network Rail is forcing office based employees to wear name badges. The General Secretary is immediately instructed to send a letter to the company seeking their policy on this matter.”

A reply has now been received from Network Rail which states; “I am not aware of any objections having been raised by employees who have been requested to wear a name badge, nor am I aware of anyone feeling that they have been forced to wear a name badge against their will.”

I would be grateful if Branches could provide any specific instances of office based employees being asked to wear a name badge against their will so I may raise these issues with the company.

Yours Sincerely

Bob Crow

General Secretary
